Understanding an Individual with Learning Disabilities

Supporting People with Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Needs

This course explores the differences between the two conditions and explains some of the treatment options available for people with learning disabilities who struggle with poor mental health. Using examples and interviews, it will provide learners with useful insights into both conditions and provide practical information, advice and guidance on how to support people in their care.

It is useful for professional carers as well as family members.

The course is broken down in to 3 bite-sized units with the following titles:

  • Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Problems
  • Promoting Mental Health
  • Assessing and Treating People With Mental Health Needs

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • List key principles and values to apply when supporting people with learning disabilities
  • Describe what is meant by a person-centred approach
  • Describe the distinction between learning disability and mental ill-health
  • Describe common mental health concerns for people with a learning disability
  • Identify the signs that someone has mental health problems and the factors that can trigger them
  • Describe how they will help to develop good practice in the workplace
  • Define their role when people they support are experiencing mental health issues
